How It Works

The challenge is open to each workplace located within Durham County or the City of Durham -- organizations small and large and belonging to any industry.  As you register, select the category "Workplace". Then, provide the brief set of information requested about your organization and the primary contact person.

The challenge has a total of 500 possible points, with additional bonus points for innovative approaches to green workplace practices. Your workplace can achieve three recognition levels -- Bronze, Silver, and Gold -- at the following point levels:

Within 30 days of registering, complete the scorecard to determine how your workplace currently ranks. Then, implement new practices and procedures listed on the scorecard to improve your workplace's score and green performance. We encourage you to update your scorecard as you make these improvements. Your final updates are due by the scoring deadline, April 15, 2018.

Once you create an account, you can view your scorecard at any time by signing in and going to your organization's dashboard

As you pursue the Bull City Workplace Challenge, we expect your workplace to make strides in reducing your overall energy use, water use, and waste production. Though we do not award points for achieving specific reduction levels, the following goals may serve as general guidelines. Of course, what's feasible depends on what you're already doing!

  Base Goal  Stretch Goal
Energy Use Reduction   10%  30%
Water Use Reduction   10%  20%
Waste Reduction & Diversion
 30%  50%

Our Toolkit provides practical and informative resources to help you pursue many scorecard actions, including useful links and contact information for local experts. You can learn more at our topical  Lunch-N-Learn events throughout the year. If you have additional questions, please write to us at BCWC@dconc.gov.

Over the year, we will profile individual participants, such as those who are high performers or who make notable progress. In spring 2018, we will host a recognition ceremony where workplaces will be recognized for their accomplishments. All participants will receive a certificate and an electronic seal of recognition displaying your achievement level, which you can use in print and online materials.
